The blank template: “Our Family Tree, Four generations” with a box for You on the left, then Parent 1 and 2, Grandparent 1 to 4 and Great-grandparent 1 to 8, each with lines for the name, born and died.

What’s on the template

  • Four generations, 15 boxes. You on the left, then 2 parents, 4 grandparents and 8 great-grandparents to the right.
  • A line for the name, plus Born and Died, in every box.
  • Neutral labels. Boxes say Parent 1 and Parent 2 rather than mother and father, so the sheet works for any family.
  • A title to keep: “Our Family Tree, Four generations” across the top.
  • One page, US letter (8.5×11 inches), landscape. It prints on a home printer.

How to fill it in by hand

  1. Print it at actual size on plain or heavier letter paper. Choose landscape if your printer asks.
  2. Write in pencil first. Ink it once the names are checked.
  3. Start with yourself, or whoever the tree is for, in the box on the left.
  4. Follow the lines to the right. Each box links to the two parents of that person: Parent 1’s parents are Grandparents 1 and 2, and Parent 2’s are Grandparents 3 and 4. The great-grandparents follow the same pattern.
  5. If a woman changed her last name when she married, write her maiden name. That’s the usual way on a family tree, and it points to her own parents.
  6. If you only know a year roughly, write “c. 1890”. If you don’t know it, leave the line empty or put a question mark.

Grandparents are often the best source for names and years that aren’t written down anywhere. Birth certificates, family Bibles, obituaries and old letters fill in the rest. For a school project, check how many generations the assignment wants; three or four fit on this sheet.

When to switch to the builder

A blank template has a fixed number of boxes. Our builder draws the chart from the people you enter, so it fits families a template can’t:

  • More than four generations. A pedigree chart goes back as far as six.
  • Second marriages and half-siblings. Each marriage gets its own branch, and every child sits under the right couple. See the blended family tree guide.
  • Big families. Nine children in one row? A descendant chart grows wider instead of squeezing names.
  • Brothers, sisters and cousins. A descendant chart from your grandparents shows everyone who came from them.
  • A poster to frame. Print at 11×17, 18×24 or 24×36 inches in one of four looks.
  • A tree that’s already online. Upload a GEDCOM file from Ancestry, MyHeritage or a family tree program instead of typing.

Building the chart, every look and size, and the on-screen preview are free, with no account. The preview carries a watermark. The clean print file, a vector PDF and a 300-dpi PNG, is $12 once, with typo fixes free for 30 days.

Out of boxes? Type your family in and the chart grows with it.

Common questions

Is the template really free?

Yes. It’s a PDF you download right away: no email, no account. Print as many copies as you need, for your family or a class.

What size is it?

US letter, 8.5×11 inches, in landscape. It prints on any home printer.

Can I type into it on my computer?

No, it’s made for handwriting and has no fill-in fields. To type names and get a chart that fits your family, use the builder instead. Building and the preview are free.

What if I need more than four generations?
